L’Ospedale Gerosolomitano, invece, si trova nell’attuale Largo S. Giovanni, al civico numero tre. Fu fondato - come si legge nella segnaletica turistica apposta vicino l’edificio - nel 1350 circa dal Sovrano Militare Ordine di Malta come Commenda di San Giovanni di Monopoli nel centro storico, con omonima chiesa.
Nel 1790 fu costruito uno stabile a due piani, adibito ad Ospedale al tempo del Commendatore di S. Giovanni di Monopoli, Frà Erberto Mirelli, come si può dedurre dalla lapide muraria, tutt'ora visibile sull'antica porta d’ingresso dell’Ospedale.
LA COMMENDA DI SAN GIOVANNI
La Commenda di San Giovanni di Monopoli è di origine antichissima. Impiantata nel territorio della città, fu, molto probabilmente, la seconda fondazione Giovannita, quella più importante dell’Ordine in Puglia, sorta sul territorio della città in epoca certamente precedente a quella Angioina, considerata la presenza del porto di Monopoli al tempo delle Crociate nel quale operarono Cavalieri Templari e Giovanniti, che nella città ebbero delle proprie “domus”. Ignoto l’anno di fondazione della Commenda, così come della persona che ve la fondò.
La Commenda era opera dei Cavalieri di Malta (che dal 1002 al 1308 si chiamarono Cavalieri Gerosolimitani, dal 1308 al 1522 Cavalieri di Rodi ed in seguito Cavalieri di Malta) e fu fondata, secondo l’Indelli, probabilmente da un cittadino di Monopoli, e prese il nome da una chiesa “intra moenia” che esisteva nella città, prima del 1350.
La Commenda di S. Giovanni di Monopoli cessò di esistere come istituzione nel principio del sec. XIX per effetto delle leggi oppressive.

The year of foundation of the Commenda is unknown, as is the person who founded it there. The Commenda was the work of the Knights of Malta (who from 1002 to 1308 were called Knights of Jerusalem, from 1308 to 1522 Knights of Rhodes and later Knights of Malta) and was founded, according to Indelli, probably by a citizen of Monopoli, and took its name from a church “intra moenia” that existed in the city, before 1350.
